Kids In The Garden



doing the gardenThere is a great new book out about gardening, Kids In The Garden by Elizabeth McCorquodale. It is a beautifully illustrated step by step guide to gardening. It starts by explaining the parts of a plant and then goes on to explain photosynthesis, pollination, fertilization, the carbon cycle, germination, watering and the water cycle. This gives you the grounding you need to then go on and find out how to grow healthy plants. It will also encourage you to plan your garden. If all you have is a window box
or a window sill don't worry. You can still grow an awful lot just in a pot. So don't be put off.
worm A compost heap and a wormery are a vital source for plants. A
compost is easy and cost nothing as it is simply recycle able kitchen waste. It will tell
you how you can make your own and what to put on it and what you mustn't put on it. The book gives advice on the usual things such as getting the right tools, attracting
birds and insects into your garden and dealing with pests. But this book goes further telling you how to measure out beds and borders, saving seeds, taking cuttings,
layering and dividing. All things you need to know if you want your garden to
continue to improve.
vegetable patch It has projects for you to undertake also things to make including some lovely recipes. So once you have grown your fruit and vegetables. You can have a go at
making beany burgers, orangey carrot butterflies, summer pudding or pizza pasta
sauce using delicious home grown tomatoes. There are more recipes in the book. I have just picked out a few that caught my eye. I am certainly going to try and make the orangey carrot butterflies. I use to love making butterfly cakes as a child.
This book is a must for all young budding gardeners. Nothing tastes as good as home grown fruit, vegetables and herbs that come straight from the garden. Spring is the ideal time to start too. So get the book and learn how to grow truly the best fruit and vegetables owing to them having the best soil, (environment) in which to grow and be really full of flavour!
