The Lost People Of Malplaquet

green leavesThe Lost People of Malplaquet is the second book in the trilogy by Andrew Dalton. It is about the Lilliputians who are only six inches high and are invisible to the majority of people. Jamie Thompson has befriended them he is thirteen and about to start at Malplaquet school. A woman known as Granny and a girl called Vicky who is a volunteer on the Malplaquet estate have also befriended them. But is there a traitor amongst them? There is also trouble at Chackmore Manor as the new owner instructs his son John to become friends with Charlie Thompson, Jamie's brother. Jedekiah Biddle who now owns the Manor is rich and his only interest seems to be the desire to make money. Could his aim to restore and make Malplaquet come alive be a danger to the Lilliputians? Perhaps Biddle has been misjudged and his intentions are purely for the greater good of Malplaquet.
Jamie, Granny and Vicky slowly begin to uncover the history and secrets of Malplaquet. The buildings though could be causing serious problems for the Lilliputians as they could be putting them in a dangerous position. There is also a Napoleonic event taking place at Malaplaquet. The Lilliputians hate loud noise as it confuses them. But Thorclan, the Lilliputian general has been preparing his troops. A battle could be about to commence. Especially as Snallard the stupid or naive Lilliputian is possibly putting them in danger by confiding in the enemy. How is it all going to end?
The book's inspiration has come from Gulliver's Travels and T.H White's Mistress Masham's Repose. It is also based around the eighteenth - century gardens at Stowe. So the story has a historical and educational element to it.
I enjoyed this book I hadn't read the first and did wonder if not being familiar with the characters from the start would be a problem. However it didn't matter at all and I really began to care what would happen to the Lilliputians. I liked the way Jamie's parents thought they were so in tune with their son, but were in actual fact completely in the dark. The trip to the archives was something I could really identify with. I also liked the touch of humour.
The Lost People of Malplaquet by Andrew Dalton is published by Lutterworth Press on the 25th January
