So you want to be a pilot
There are many ways you can fill your ambition as a pilot through commercial, business or leisure. But probably the two main opportunities are as an airline or military pilot.
It is a huge responsibility as you have to check data, check your instruments, make sure you have enough fuel and be able to communicate well with Air Traffic control. You will also have to fly during bad weather. Pilots work nights, weekends and holidays. So you would have to be prepared to work these odd hours. Depending on the flight you could spend long hours in the confinements of an aeroplane. Time zones and periods away from home are also issues you will have to deal with. An important quality you will need is calmness as this is a stressful job where emergencies do have to be dealt with quickly and calmly. It can take seven to ten years to reach the job of captain.
Being a military pilot means you will be involved in conflicts and wars. This is dangerous as with an airline pilot you will need to work in a team and have leadership qualities. Good eye sight and hearing are vital. A medical test is taken to ensure you are fit to fly. This is a challenging but a rewarding career for those who love flying.
