So you want to be a Music Therapist



musical notesMusic therapy helps people with all sorts of problems. These could include behaviour, emotional mental health problems, communication problems, learning difficulties and stress. It can help children and adults of various ages.
Music therapy is a way to help bring about a change for the better not only in behaviour but emotionally as well. Each session actively involves both the therapist and the person they are helping. They will use a
range of instruments, these include the voice and percussion. They also help you to discover sound and encourage you to create a musical language.
Music is a great inspiration it can also be calming and soothing, it is a social form of entertainment. So it is not surprising it can help people with problems.
If you want to be a music therapist you will need to be extremely good
at music you will have to be accomplished to a high level. In fact you
will probably need 3 years musical training before you can take up
a music therapy course. The course is 1 to 2 years depending if you
want to do it full or part time. It will involve both practical and theoretical teaching. So you will be learning in the classroom as well as visiting hospitals, schools and other places where music therapists work.
You will have to plan your sessions take down notes and reports and approach the musical as well as the non - musical abilities of the person you are helping. Music therapists normally work Monday to Friday from
9 to 5. But some can work weekends.
