A Career as a Vet



A vet with a dog It is not easy becoming a vet. First of all you will need a high grade in you're A levels or the equivalent qualification. Biology and chemistry are
a virtual must science, maths, Physics and English are also important at GCSE level. You will need to have worked with animals. It won't help if you are squeamish as you will have to do practical work. This means working in a veterinary laboratory a veterinary practice and an abattoir. The degree that you take has to be approved by The Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons. At the moment there are only 6 universities that have a veterinary school in the United Kingdom. It can take 5 to 6 years to qualify as a vet. In order to practice once qualified you will have to register with The Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons. To keep up to date with medical advancements and so on you will need to go on courses during your career. Vets work nights and weekends and have to be available in emergencies.
If you want to work with farm and other large animals you will need to be prepared to work in all kinds of weather as it is nearly all outside. Being able to drive is really an essential part of the job. As you will have to either visit animals on farms or in an emergency.
It is a tough job and a vet has to make a diagnosis by asking the owner of the animal various questions as well examining the animal.
A vet is a doctor, surgeon and dentist to an animal. They will treat, prescribe medicine, operate, clean and extract teeth. A lot of the time they will need to be sympathetic and understanding as they will have to put some animals to sleep if they are not going to get better.
So if you have a love of animals are excellent at science and are caring and get on well with both animals and people. You will also need to be well organised, be
able to explain things in a simple understandable way and not get to sentimental. Then you may want to make veterinary work your career.
