D- Day
D - Day took place on the 6th June 1944 it was make or break time. The invasion would mark the beginning of the end of World War II.
It had been due to start on the 1st May 1944 but they needed more time. So it was put off until the 5th June. But because of bad weather it had to be the 6th June.
The code name for the invasion was operation overlord and the attacking stage was known as operation Neptune. The allied troops were to land in Normandy, France. About 156,000 would land on the beaches that were code named Utah, Omaha, Gold, Juno and Sword.
Over thousands of planes from both the RAF and America took part in air attacks. These were used as a deceptive action to draw them away from the actual landings as well as to cause problems for the Germans.
The allies managed to give out false messages to the Germans about where they would land. They were also able to decode any German transmissions. Although the German troops were taken by surprise. This didn't make the operation any less difficult. Thousands lost their lives during D- Day. It was also a crucial stage of the war and if they had failed and Hitler had won the war things would be very different today.
The allies managed to hold and defeat Normandy and even went on to help liberate Paris.
