The Duke Of Edinburgh Award
The Duke of Edinburgh's Award has been going over 50 years. It is a charity and is open to anybody from 14 to 25 years - old. The award is voluntary and is a wonderful way of encouraging young people. It gives them confidence, independence and helps them become responsible to others. There is also an opportunity to make friends. All of these are important life skills.
It was Kurt Hahn who suggested the scheme, activities for young people throughout the country. It has since become worldwide. He was HRH The Duke of Edinburgh's old headmaster. HRH became patron and chairman. He has continued in his role as patron ever since. HRH The Duke of Edinburgh reputedly once said something like "Every child needs a prize for something he is good at." I have tried to check to find out exactly what he did say. But I haven't been able to get any confirmation yet.
There are three awards bronze, silver and gold. Nearly 2 million people have been awarded one of these awards since the scheme began. In order to gain one of these you have to do various things, expeditions, skills, physical recreation and service. The gold will also include a trip away from home for a minimum of 5 days. The purpose is to help you develop as an individual.
You can do it in your own time this makes it more flexible. So people can fit it in with everything else they need or want to do.
It is hoped the activities
will challenge you to surpass your expectations. Nothing though is forced and it should be your decision to do the award. It will give you independence and the experience of working with other people. It will also help you cope with various situations. All very important learning tools for when you leave school. You will have a better preparation for the working environment. The main purpose though is you have fun and enjoy it.
This is a brilliant scheme and is even more essential now with all the problems children face. This is a truly excellent way of helping them develop and by giving them responsibility they will become good citizens.
