FilmClub

clapper board There is a great after school club called FilmClub for those of you who love films. It is especially good if you want to discover more about the world of films either for fun or to develop your interest further perhaps even with the intention of having a career in film.
FilmClub will not just get you watching films you enjoy it will introduce you to a
wider selection of films, such as old, classic, international, blockbuster and art films.
For example Hotel Rwanda (12) is the true story about a man who rescues a huge
number of refugees in Rwanda. Then there is Afghan Star which is a sort of
Afghanistan pop idol. There are other films like this about Iran, Iraq, Burma,
Palestine and Israel. They are part of what is called "Film Journeys: Behind the Headlines" for primary and secondary school children. They help you to find out
what is going on in the world and have a better understanding of how other people
live. These people may well have to cope with war, human rights abuse, no democracy and so on.
You will be able to discuss the films and even write about them. It could give you a
taste of what it is like to be a film critic. They won't simply help you to develop your own stories. You will be able to discover how a story is turned into a screenplay, stunts and acting skills, how to create action on screen and how they make fake blood. They offer exclusive events and visits from people in the film industry to help inspire you.
These are what they call Close Encounters which gives you the chance to find
out more about the process of film-making. They even have special in-school question and answer sessions. So whether you are a film buff who is interested in
finding out more about films or someone who is interested in a career in the film industry, this gives you the opportunity to explore and discover all of that. If you join
up there are also other things such as access to an online community, newsletter, free promotional stuff and posters.
Another great thing about FilmClub is it is free. This is because it's funded by the state, the Government Department for Children, Schools and families are funding it. Because it is state funded it is free to join if you are a state school. However if you are at a private school don't despair FilmClub will see what they can do to help.
FilmClub is becoming an enormously popular after school activity. It was started by film director Beeban Kidron and writer Lindsay Mackie. They wanted to pass on
their passion for film as well as helping children and young people discover more
about the world of film.
FilmClub on the Road is a team that gives help, advice and guidance to schools with
an after school FilmClub
If you are a teacher or a pupil at school and want to know how your school can sign
up then visit www.filmclub.org for details.
