Marc Bolan

marc bolanMarc Bolan was one of the people that created what was known in the 1970's as glam rock. He started the pop group Tyrannosaurus Rex in the late 1960's. It was later shorted to T - Rex.
You may think you have never heard of them but their music has been used in a mobile phone advertisement and several films including Billy Elliot. The film featured several of T - Rex's songs including I Love to Boogie.
He was born Mark Feld on the 30th September 1947 in Hackney, East London. He was the second child of Simeon and Phyllis Feld a van driver and caretaker. He had an elder brother Harry.
Bolan became interested in music after his father bought him a Bill Haley record. He had meant to buy him one by Bill Hayes. The mistake proved a worthy one. His parents encouraged his interest in music. Bolan's mother even bought him his first guitar. His extravagant clothes began to get him noticed. Having become a mod he would enjoy hanging around cafes. A men's magazine did an article about him and his friends.
He was in several bands and used to busk in London but it was T - Rex that made him into a star. The band had many top ten hits. Some of them were number 1's.
Bolan was married to June Child a secretary but the marriage didn't last. He had a son Rolan with his backing singer Gloria Jones in September 1975. He has since followed in his father's footsteps and become a musician. By the early 1970's Marc Bolan began to lose his appeal. But in 1977 he had a slight comeback appearing on television in the Saturday morning music programme Supersonic. He also had his own television programme where he would have new and established groups on. He would also perform his songs the programme was broadcast at tea time for children and teenagers to enjoy. It proved very popular.
Marc Bolan died on the 16th September 1977. When the car, a Mini which was being driven by Gloria Jones spun out of control and hit a tree. He was killed instantly. Gloria Jones suffered injuries and shock. The tree became a tribute to him with flowers messages and ribbons being stuck on it over the years.
Marc Bolan would have been 60 at the end of September. Ironically he never learnt to drive for fear of dying in a car crash. Little did he realise that just being a passenger could kill you.
