Saint Patrick

March the 17th is Saint Patrick's Day; he is the patron saint of Ireland. He is also probably the most celebrated Saint, whether you are Irish, a little bit Irish or even if you are not Irish at all!
Saint Patrick lived in the fourth century and he
was born in either
Britain or Scotland no one really knows and his birth place can
vary from one opinion to another. When he was sixteen he was kidnapped and imprisoned by Irish raiders, in county Antrim, Ireland where he worked as a shepherd. If his faith hadn't been
strong before it would gradually become so now. He prayed to God
as he was being held by pagans. He managed to escape six years later. He then became a monk and he was called back to Ireland.
It is due to St Patrick that Ireland is a Christian country. He explained to them in simple terms that there were three persons in
one God by using the shamrock, a three leaf clover. This helped him to describe the Trinity (God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy spirit.)
He was also given the credit for banishing snakes from Ireland although they never actually had any. But it was a symbol of paganism.
St Patrick died in Saul Downpatrick, Ireland on March the 17th.
St Patrick's Day is a holiday in Ireland and Shamrock and the colour green are worn. Prayers are said and cards are sent wishing
a happy St Patrick's Day. There are also parades. It is celebrated in many countries particularly in America where there is a large Irish community.
